Gastric Balloon
The Intra Gastric Balloon is a simple gastric surgery devise, fitted inside the stomach, to create short term & rapid weight loss. The gastric balloon is a soft, silicone sack that is inserted into the stomach and filled with sterile saline. With the gastric balloon you will have a feeling of satiety, or lack of hunger. The gastric balloon will be removed after 6 months. With the help of the gastric balloon, you can more easily adopt the lifestyle changes that you will need to lose weight.
The balloon programme, by comparison, offers many distinct advantages over conventional diets and weight loss programmes. With the balloon you will:
- Have a feeling of fullness.
- Lose more weight than with other programmes.
- Be supported by a team of medical experts.
- Learn principles for long-term success.
- No need for General Anaesthetic so less risk of complication.
During Surgery
The 500cc ball is inserted into your stomach through your mouth, and then later filled with sterile saline solution. This is usually performed under local anaesthetic and sedation and takes between 20 – 30 minutes. This means that your recovery is normally very swift. The balloon has a life span of 6 months and has to be emptied and removed endoscopically.
After Surgery
The first few days may be uncomfortable until your stomach adjusts to the balloon. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, bloating with cramps which are normal and should be expected. Medication can be prescribed to alleviate these side effects. Once the balloon has been in place for 2-3 weeks your stomach should have adjusted to the presence of the balloon and any side effects associated with the balloon dissipate.
