Implants & Veneers
Dental Implants
Dental implants are an effective, secure and permanent solution to the problem of missing teeth. Adults who are missing one or many teeth due to injury, disease, or decay may be a candidate for implants. When an entire tooth is lost shrinkage of the jawbone may occur making the face look older. An Implant replaced the entire tooth including both crown and root.
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as a replacement of the root portion of the missing tooth. The implant is placed in a small hole in the bone which the surgeon prepares as part of the procedure. This implant serves as an anchor for the replacement tooth and bonds with the bone over a period of 3 to 6 months. A ceramic crown is then fixed on top of the permanent implant.
The treatment is carried out in two sessions. The first session involves placing the implants into the jawbone. After 6 months the crowns can be attached to the implants. Care is always taken to ensure that the new crowns match the colour and shape of your existing teeth.
Veneers
Dental veneers are very thin coverings deigned to fit over the surface of your tooth. This is widely used to change the appearance of gaped, crooked or damaged teeth and beats bleaching to achieve that whiter smile.
A professional teeth clean must be carried out before the veneers are put in place. The dentist will also shave off a fine layer of enamel from each tooth. The veneers are custom made from a dental cast which usually takes up to 10 days. The veneers are then bonded to the front of the tooth using a special adhesive.
The life span of veneers can be up to 10 years but this will also depend on hygienic care and maintenance. You must also be careful of hard crunchy sweets as these can damage the veneer.
